On Thursday 8th July, we had a mathemagician come into school to perform shows to year 6 and 7. He inspired and engaged pupils with his lively show. He demonstrated lots of ‘tricks’ and explained how they worked and the maths involved. He did various mind reading tricks and illusions which amazed the pupils. Dr Mark showed how to cut a hole in a piece of A4 paper big enough to walk through. Pupils tried this in lessons and one class managed to get the whole class inside the loop they made.

Are you fed up with a slow internet connection or non existent broad band service from your home?
If you live in Denby Dale, Upper Denby, Birdsedge, High Flatts, Clayton West, Scissett, Emley, Shepley or Cumberworth you could benefit from a project to improve internet, telephone and TV services.
Rutland Telecom is working with Denby Dale Area Committee and Parish Council to improve broadband services in this area. For the project to go ahead enough residents need to express an interest in the first instance.
To find out more and to register your interest phone Rutland Telecom on 01572 858858 or visit
www.rutlandtelecom.co.uk/denbydale. This does not commit you to anything and it won’t cost you money, it is purely an expression of interest.
Unfortunately we have had to postpone the e-safety evening which was due to be held on Wed 19th May. This is due to our guest e-safety expert and presenter being taken into hospital. We apologise for any inconvenience and will announce a new date for this event shortly.
Zoolab, a company which provides facinating hands-on roadshows, came into school to show our pupils various animals from the rainforests. Year 8 pupils received a presentation featuring a number of different animals including 2 tarantulas, 2 madagascan hissing cockroaches, a snake and a tree frog.

The pupils got to handle the animals and ask questions. It was a really enjoyable and valuable experience that brought to life the work they have been doing on ecosystems.

We have now launched our 'text messaging to parents' service. We will use the service to inform parents in the event of, for example, school closure or to parents of a sports team or perhaps just to one parent if a child needed to make contact. We will also send general messages to keep you up to date with what's happening at Scissett Middle School. In short, the texting service should be a valuable, additional means of communication between school and families.
If you think we may not have your most up to date mobile phone number, or if you do not wish to receive text messages from school then please contact the school office. |
The MUGA is finally in use. Hurrah! I was beginning to think the day would never come. It should have been in use from last October but problems with the retaining wall, pitch markings, sand for stabilising and levelling the pitch and poor weather have all contributed to the delay.
It is only available, at present, for ‘light use’ as another 15 tonnes of sand has to cover the surface and filter through the carpet before it will be fully usable. This is likely to be during the summer term. ‘Light use’ means it is available for lessons during the school day and for use by local young people in the evenings and week-ends on an informal basis. The MUGA is not yet available for hire.

It is great to see the floodlights on and youngsters playing on it – I always want to join in with them. The MUGA has been built as a school and community facility and we raised half the £240,000 to provide a bigger and better MUGA than was originally proposed by the Local Authority. We want it to
be well used – but we want it to be looked after and used responsibly. It is a real asset to the school, community and young people – enjoy it.

On Sunday, 25 April Mr Hampson is running the London Marathon to support the Charity ‘Get Kids Going’. This charity supports young and talented disabled athletes, and helps to provide equipment such as specially designed Sports Wheelchairs. Also running is his wife Julie, a teacher of ICT at Shelley College, who is running for the Motor Neurone Disease Association in support of her brother who was recently diagnosed with the disease.
Mr Hampson explained, ‘We watched the Marathon when we visited London last year and immediately decided we should give it a go. It is a great opportunity to help those who are a lot less fortunate than ourselves and perhaps we can get fit at the same time!’

Ten parents took advantage of the opportunity to improve their understanding of Maths. They have been spending each Monday afternoon in the classroom and give the impression that they are enjoying the experience. It’s great to see them in school each week.
There was a great response from parents to support the school by organising family social events in consultation with Mrs Odile Scouarnec and Mrs Vikki Ward. The first meeting was very well attended and the first event of the year was planned and jobs allocated.

We would like to thank Innovation Productions of Skelmanthorpe for the loan of a roaming spotlight for our Arts Festival this week. Unfortunately at the beginning of the second night our own spotlight developed a fault and a after a quick phone call to Innovation a spotlight was loaned to us, free of charge, in time for the second half!
Innovation specialise in the planning, production and installation of A/V equipment for entertainment events. Please see their website
www.innovation-products.com for more details.
A big thankyou to Innovation Productions!
Last week Scissett Middle School pupils experienced the NED show, a program seen by nearly 2 million children a year worldwide. This unique character-building assembly combined a great message with yo-yos, humour and audience participation to teach children how to develop three valuable characteristics involved in becoming champions at school and in life. Ask your child if he or she can tell you what NED taught.
Never give up (focus, persistence)
Encourage others (kindness, shared learning)
Do your best (diligence, excellence)
For the next five days, our school will have NED items available for sale. Each child will receive a free yo-yo trick sheet and our school will receive two different and exciting how to yo-yo DVDs. The NED show comes to us free of charge.
We have attached (below) some further information including the yo-yo trick sheet and an order form for NED items including yo-yos.

At 14:09 hours today, the RAF Red Arrows flew over Scissett Middle School to celebrate the school's Arts Festival. In response, our pupils, wearing coloured t-shirts, formed a giant rainbow which hopefully could be seen by all ten pilots as they flew overhead.

It was a fantastic display enjoyed by pupils, staff and many locals who turned out to see.
The local newspaper and Calendar news were also here, so don't forget to watch ITV tonight!

On 21
st and 22
nd May, Year 6 pupils performed Alan Ayckbourn’s play, Ernie’s Incredible Illucinations, a tale of a boy whose daydreams come true.

There were laughs aplenty from the audience and profit from ticket sales will be put towards our next dramatic venture, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, which will be performed as part of the schools Shakespeare Festival at the West Yorkshire Playhouse on 5th November.
We have updated the 'important dates' and 'holiday dates' pages on the website. Holiday dates for the next 12 months are now available.
On Tuesday 31st March, the year 6 Netball Team took part in the Newsome School Sports Partnership High 5 Netball Tournament. Eight teams from various schools all attended the tournament held at Newsome High School and Sports college. Each match lasted 6 minutes each way with a 2 minute half time break to allow players to rotate positions. Section A winners Kirkburton A team went on to the semi finals to play Section B runners up Kirkburton B team and Section A runners up Scissett B team went on to play Section B winners Scissett A team. In the final Scissett A team and Kirkburton A team came head to head. It was a very close game and both teams played extremley well but Scissett A team came out on top with Ellie Procter scoring the winning 2 goals.
The girls progressed to the Kirklees finals and again won what proved to be another very close and competitive competition. They will now represent Kirkless at the West Yorkshire Youth Games to be held at Carnegie University later in June. A big congratulations to all the girls who took part.
On Wednesday 22nd March, the year 7 Netball team triumphed in the Huddersfield Schools Tournament. Having played well all season, finishing runners up in the league to a very good Kirkburton team, the girls finished in style, winning the year 7 tournament at Newsome Sports College. In an extremely nail biting final against a strong Colne Valley team, Scissett ran out winners 6-5. A big congratulations to all the girls who have been involved this year.
